Microsoft and Yahoo Partnership

Posted 29 Jul 2009

Well, it’s finally happened: Microsoft has teamed up with Yahoo, and they’re throwing down the gauntlet in Google’s face. Don’t expect any of this overnight, but basically Microsoft’s Bing and Yahoo Search are combining audiences. This would give the partners a 28% share of the total Internet search audience. What’s more, it will boost the brand recognition of Bing, the new gizmo-packed version of Microsoft Live Search that debuted last month.

According to Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer:
“Microsoft and Yahoo know there’s so much more that search could be … this agreement gives us the scale and resources to create the future of search.”

Understand, this will take some time. Merging Bing and Yahoo Search is an enormous logistical effort that we may not see the fruits of for a good while. The partnership is based on a 10-year contract that is unlikely to start before the first of the year, and it could be another two years after that before all the ducks are in a row.

Still, this is an exciting development for search engine marketers and something we’ll keep our eye on in the coming months.
