Dana Point Hotel for Beachfront Holiday Getaways

Our unusual trip through fun Christmas time beach getaways began here if you’re playing the home game.

Dana Point doesn’t get the love of its California cousins, as it always seems to be overshadowed by big names like Redondo Beach, Santa Monica, San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco or even its closest neighbor, Laguna Beach (here at USA Travel Guide, we blame a certain MTV “reality” show). But what it lacks in name recognition, this Orange County favorite makes up for in variety and savings.

Located more or less midway between Los Angeles and San Diego, Dana Point offers multi-day visitors wide open entertainment options for less per day than you would spend staying in either city. You can avoid “paying for the name” if you will, and still enjoy a daytrip (or night trip) down to San Diego for a classic SoCal vacation.

Of course, this series is about beachfront getaways, and Dana Point has got it covered. With over a mile of soft, sandy goodness, Doheny State Beach is your best bet in Dana Point. Once a renowned surfing destination, Doheny State Beach used to be home to the notorious “Killer Dana” wave until construction routed the water. Still, it’s a great place to surf and with ample picnic facilities, a great place to spend a holiday afternoon.

There’s fantastic whale watching during the wintertime, too, but that’s another post.

For Dana Point hotels, I like the Doubletree Guest Suites Doheny Beach. It’s got a nice resort feel at family-friendly prices, and you can walk to the beach.
