Our bold exploration into the world of beach-bound holiday getaways continues.
An idyllic climate and laidback attitude promise holiday visitors of Santa Monica, California a low key getaway indeed. From lazy days spent cruising the boardwalk to romantic evenings spent admiring the sunset, Santa Monica makes a smart choice for those who want their egg nog served with an umbrella in it.
Surprisingly, Santa Monica also fares well for family getaways, especially for those who already bought the financial farm on presents. Dining around town is affordable and avoids the hoity-toity atmosphere of most “upscale” destinations. You won’t find a suit-and-tie joint in town. Meanwhile, there’s limitless free fun to be had on Santa Monica Pier. The on-site amusement park, Pacific Park, is admission-free year-round, the only of its kind in the Los Angeles area, and yes, it’s open on Christmas day!
When you’ve had your fill of the rides, head over to the famous hand-carved carousel, finished in 1922 and in active duty ever since, or hit up the Playland Arcade where classic boardwalk games shoulder up with the latest releases. (Let’s face it, if you don’t like skeeball, there’s really no helping you!)
For Santa Monica hotels, we like the Holiday Inn Santa Monica Beach – At the Pier. For one thing, you can walk to the Santa Monica Pier and the beach, so were already in the realm of hassle-free. For another thing, it’s Holiday Inn, and that means it’s great for younger children. Take advantage of their Kids Eat Free program and take the economic bite out of holiday travel.
More to come…

I have stayed at this hotel with family and done the whole Santa Monica Pier experience- it was awesome. The sunsets are beautiful and the atmosphere on the pier is electric. I highly suggest Santa Monica for a family getaway and the Holiday Inn (which was recently renovated) is a great place to stay at a reasonable price.
Are there any good Branson hotels?
