When you think about it, winter is actually a great time to visit the zoo, provided that zoo isn’t located in North Dakota. A lot of popular family diversions like amusement parks and especially water parks are all closed up for the season, and despite our efforts to the contrary, more people are staying home for the holidays this year than in years past. So what’s a family to do? I say, go to the zoo!
If you’re ready to believe that 1.5 million people every year can’t be wrong, then the Houston Zoo belongs on your zoological bucket list. Over 900 species and nearly 5000 animals call this rabidly-attended zoo home, including lions, tigers, bears (oh my!), komodo dragons, Asian elephants, massive rhinos and an incredible collection of monkeys and primates.
Unique to the Houston Zoo is the prodigious priority on education. All throughout the park you can stumble upon “Keeper Chats”, unscripted meeting sessions where any visitor can have their questions fielded by actual zoo trainers and doctors. It’s a level of transparency you might not be expecting, and for those interested in more than just looking, it’s really the best you’ll find.
Tip: Plan ahead and you can enjoy a free day. Every year, the Houston Zoo honors five free-admission days: Columbus Day, New Year’s Day, President’s Day, the day after Thanksgiving (Black Friday), Martin Luther King Day.
For Houston, Texas hotels, consider the Crowne Plaza Houston Hotel – Downtown. It’s located only three miles from the zoo, and the business-friendly attitude means low prices for any guest.

This is a fantastic posting! Living in Dallas, Texas I have found that there are not too many diverse drive-to destinations. However, Houston is undeniably a great example of vacation destination the entire family will enjoy and Houston Zoo is one of the city’s attractions you cannot afford to miss. I have taken my children to the Zoo twice and what an amazing learning experience it was! I will definitely check out Crowne Plaza Hotel Houston Downtown next time I plan to visit. When you spend four hours on the road, you do not want to stay far from things to do and see.
