Every February, one lucky city has a chance to host a basketball extravaganza of such spectacle and fanfare as to rival Game Seven of the NBA Finals (well … almost): the NBA All-Star Weekend and Game. A chance for seasoned pros, rookies, celebrities, fans and the best of the best to come together, let their hair down and celebrate the greatness of the game in a spirit of friendship, the All-Star Weekend is an at-least-once-in-a-lifetime must for diehard NBA fans.
As you might have guessed by the name, the event has grown far beyond the friendly match-up between the East and West conferences’ top players into three days of exciting events. There’s the Rookie Challenge, where the league’s rookies take on the sophomores for newb supremacy, the All-Star Saturday Night, which is a collection of events and skill contests like three-pointer and slam dunk contests, and even the Celebrity All-Star Game, which is basically what it sounds like.
Growing rapidly in the last few years is Jam Sessions, a sort of interactive basketball theme park that is hosted outside the arena complex. You can play ball, meet some stars and find plenty of fun for the kids.
The 2009 NBA All-Star Weekend will be held from February 13-15 in Phoenix, Arizona at the US Airways Center, home of the NBA’s Phoenix Suns. Tickets are still available by event, but be warned that even the cheap seats, well, aren’t.
For Phoenix hotels, look into the Embassy Suites Phoenix-Scottsdale. They have a free breakfast buffet and cocktail reception every day, and it looks like they’ll be offering a $50 gas card package in February. A good choice for families, too.
