Woodfield Mall – Schaumburg, Illinois
What do you think is the top tourist attraction in the state of Illinois. Six Flags Great America? Navy Pier? Grant Park? Sears Tower? Soldier Field? Well, assuming you haven’t already cheated and read the title of this post, you might be surprised to find that it’s actually a shopping mall. It’s true! At 27 millions visitors annually, the Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg, Illinois is the most attended tourist attraction in the state.
(Whether or not a mall should count as a tourist attraction is a debate we’ll leave for another day…)
When the Woodfield Mall first opened 1971, times were humble indeed with only 28 stores and restaurants combined. But things blossomed quickly for the old girl and soon 138 stores were bringing life to the Woodfield Mall. Many of those early stores, like Waldenbooks, Lerner and Gingiss, are still open today, in fact. The market-perfect blend of upscale sensibility, location and variety couldn’t be contained, however, and now the mall has exploded to over 280 stores and 2.7 million sq. ft. of retail space, the fifth largest in the nation.
Anchor stores include JCPenney, Lord & Taylor, Macy’s, Nordstrom and Sears while the corridor retailers run the gamut from Samsonite to Build-a-Bear to everything in between. Uniquely, the Woodfield Mall does not have a food court, opting instead for sit down-style restaurants throughout the mall.
The Woodfield Mall also stands apart for its proactive treatment of out-of-town visitors. Anyone who travels more than 50 miles to visit the Woodfield Mall may pick up an exclusive mall coupon book with dozens of savings opportunities.
You can stay less than a half-mile away when you stay at the Doubletree Hotel Chicago / Schaumburg, always our team’s choice for Chicago area hotels in Schaumburg. A great hotel for lots of reasons, this time it’s the location that just can’t be beat.
