Family Fun – San Francisco Family Vacation Ideas

With high-end accommodations, a trendy attitude and plenty of cosmopolitan art cred to maintain, San Francisco typically doesn’t get the credit it deserves as a family destination. That’s a real shame, because between the cable cars, parks and a host of kid-friendly museums and attractions, the City by the Bay has family entertainment in spades. Consider:

  • San Francisco Zoo – a mid-sized zoo with over 250 animals and real world-style habitats (and I don’t mean styled after the MTV show)
  • Alcatraz – the infamous prison offers family-friendly tours that are a little frightening, but always fascinating
  • The Exploratorium – a sensational “hands on” museum the encourages scientific exploration and analytical discovery
  • San Francisco Carousel – historic carousel located at Pier 39
  • Ghirardelli Square – diverse shopping district and home of the Ghirardelli Soda Fountain, an ice cream and chocolate-lovers dream come true
  • Wax Museum – located at Fisherman’s Wharf, this popular museum has over 250 figures and frequently features new additions

When it comes to family-friendly accommodations, we almost always reach for Holiday Inns. Most families can appreciate the mid-to-budget price, and brand offerings such as the Kids Eat Free service and in-room movies and games are invaluable as well.

Pier 39

So, for San Francisco hotels we like the Holiday Inn San Francisco Fisherman’s Wharf Hotel (though they might want to shorten the name).  The Fisherman’s Wharf location actually puts you within walking distance of some of the above attractions. But don’t just take my word for it, they’ve provided some information of their own on this very subject. Or for an even more affordable option, head next door to the Holiday Inn Express Fisherman’s Wharf Hotel.
