We’re back in Big Bear, but it’s just for a quick stopover. Think of it as a companion piece to our post on Big Bear ski resort packages.
In the wintertime, Big Bear Lake in Southern California is known for quality skiing and snowboarding, but that’s certainly not the only top-notch attraction in town. Maybe you’re looking for something different, maybe you need an inexpensive alternative, maybe the kids only take to skis about as well as I take to organic chemistry – whatever the hold up, for you there’s Alpine Slide at Magic Mountain.
Located in the Magic Mountain Recreation Area, Alpine Slide is a year-round multi-attraction park designed for families with a bunch of different desires to satisfy. The roster changes slightly by season, but the most important ride is open all year long. The Alpine Slide itself is boasted to be Southern California’s only authentic bobsled experience, and indeed it is convincing. Riders take control of individual sleds and have their choice of two quarter-mile long cement courses with turns for thrills and straights for speed. It’s not quite multi-man bobsledding, but it’s decidedly different from traditionally sledding.
Not that you can’t enjoy some traditional sledding. Alpine Slide at Magic Mountain also features a large snow play park for tubing and the like, as well as an 18-hole miniature golf course, go-karts and a chairlift, each open year-round. During the summer you can also enjoy a pair of waterslides, but right now we’re talking winter.
For hours, rates and more, visit their Web site.
Once again we recommend the Northwoods Resort and Conference Center when browsing Big Bear hotels.
Check back in tomorrow (2/18/09) when we launch our 2009 Spring Break coverage. Big Bear Lake is a great choice for that, by the way!

I have taken my kids there several times in the past and they always have a Great Time! Just be sure to use the brake on the bob sleds when going down Magic Mountain or you could end up like me when racing my Son down the hill. (OUCH)
