Family Spring Break Ideas – Cocoa Beach, Florida

You got your beachfront getaway in my family vacation! You got your family vacation in my beachfront getaway!

Like chocolate and peanut butter, fried chicken and waffles, or bacon and absolutely anything, family vacations and beachfront getaways are two great tastes that taste great together. And one of our favorite places to find the flavor is Florida’s beautiful Space Coast. I’m talking Cocoa Beach, people!

We’ve mentioned this family-friendly beachfront paradise a few times before, but I don’t know that we’ve ever done the abundance and variety of Cocoa Beach justice. As the season ramps up and more and more families are scouring for that perfect Spring Break 2009 idea, there couldn’t be a better time. Here are our favorite Cocoa Beach attractions: 

• Cocoa Beach – Spring Break beach vacations don’t have to be all Jose Cuervo and bad intentions. Cocoa Beach adapts the party atmosphere during the season, but somehow the family crowd always manages to bite off its piece. Surfing is big game here, as is swimming, body boarding, beach volleyball and tanning. For architects in the making, the sand is ideal for sandcastle building.
• Cocoa Village – Just a few minutes inland in historic downtown Cocoa Beach, the Cocoa Village is all charm, hospitality and eclecticism. One moment they’re hosting a crafts fair, the next it’s a spirited jazz band in the gazebo, while year-round you can find antiques, boutiques, shops and restaurants. Visit Friday and Saturday nights for the groovy ghost tour.
• Ron Jon Surf Shop – Not an attraction so much as a rite of passage. Ron Jon Surf Shop is a Mecca of sorts for the surfing community, and if that means you, don’t miss your chance to make the trip. The Cocoa Beach location is currently the largest surf shop in the world.
• Cocoa Beach Pier – Like the Village, Cocoa Beach Pier is a multi-attraction destination, offering everything from shopping and dining to live music and games. Also, this is the place for anglers of any cut with over 800 ft. of fishable pier.
• Jungle Adventures – It’s a little bit of a drive out to this Christmas, Florida favorite, but it’s well worth it. Jungle Adventures is an endlessly amusing zoo and nature park known for it’s collection of 200 very much alive alligators. Learn more.
• Kennedy Space Center – They call it the Space Coast, and here’s why. Cocoa Beach, FL is just a few miles from the John F. Kennedy Space Center, NASA’s most active launch facility. While you can view a launch if you time it right, the real fun of the Kennedy Space Center is the adjacent visitor complex featuring kid-pleasing attractions including a simulated shuttle launch, tours of the Center, meetings with real astronauts, IMAX films and so much more.

If you really want to go out big, throw your kids for a loop with a surprise trip to Walt Disney World. Cocoa Beach is just 60 miles out from Orlando.

For Florida Spring Break beach vacations in Cocoa Beach, it’s got to be the Holiday Inn Cocoa Beach Oceanfront Resort. The reasons could go on: it’s Holiday Inn so the kids eat free, it’s pet-friendly so you can bring the whole family, it’s located on the beach, it’s a green hotel, and they’ve got competitive starting rates with vacation packages featuring attraction tickets and other goodies.
