Genghis Khan Exhibit at the Houston Museum of Natural Science

I went to the King Tut Exhibit at the Dallas Museum of Art this past Saturday. Quite a few of us at the office have seen it now. My wife and I were blown away by a few of the pieces, but couldn’t hide our disappointment towards ancient Egypt’s lax work ethic. Over 50 statues, and not one with a formed pair of legs. That’s just lazy.

It did get me in the mood for more, though, and it turns out there’s another exhibit detailing an iconic leader just a few hours away in Houston, Texas.

Genghis Khan

Titled simply “Genghis Khan“, this expansive exhibit at the Houston Museum of Natural Science delves into the brutal yet incredible life of history’s most successful conqueror. Through story, history and myth, the exhibit explores the fascinating contradiction of Khan’s life: he is known as a barbarian, known for his merciless domination of millions, yet he established freedom of religion and the arts, free trade, national parks, a postal system, even passports. Some scholars believe that Khan’s empire was one of the safest and most prosperous in history.

The exhibit also has plenty to see. Over two hundred artifacts from the 13th century, including the Mongol’s modern weaponry, his flamboyant riches and even the first-ever printing press are on display. The Web site notes that this is the largest collection of Khan-era artifacts ever.

“Genghis Khan” exhibits at the Houston Museum of Natural Science through September 7, 2009. Regular adult admission is $22. The exhibit operates at regular museum hours. Learn more here.

Since it’s only a few miles out, we just had to go with the Crowne Plaza Downtown Houston Hotel. The hotel is currently offering a museum package with two tickets to the Genghis Khan exhibit. That’s a $44 savings right there. Learn more.
