That’s right, Houston again. Finishing our last piece about the Genghis Khan exhibit at the Houston Museum of Natural Science stirred up some interest in off-the-beaten-path Houston attractions. I got to thinking how Houston, Texas has a heck of a drive market:
Of course there’s Galveston on the coast, home of Moody Gardens and Kemah Boardwalk, and also Surfside beach. A little north from that you’ll find San Jacinto State Park, where you can see Battleship Texas. And for those willing to make a day of it, you’ve got Huntsville, Corpus Christi, San Antonio and Austin, all with plenty to see and do.
There’s actually one more option, closer than any of those, that we happen to like a lot: Sugar Land. Technically a suburb of Houston and about 20 miles from downtown to downtown, Sugar Land is a rapidly growing upscale Texas community that has racked up a lot of positive press over the past few years by the likes of Forbes, CNN, and the state itself with rankings in lists like “Top Suburbs to Live Well” and “100 Best Cities to Live In”.

There are plenty of reasons for Houston visitors to drop in to Sugar Land from time to time, but many will attest that the place for first-timers is the Sugar Land Town Square. This sprawling lifestyle center provides guests the ideal blend of upscale and affordable shopping, dining and attractions. Retail runs the gamut from Ann Taylor Loft to A Dog’s Life: Luxury Dog Boutique, and dining ranges just as widely from a mass-market staple like Chipotle to the fine Texas cuisine of The Burning Pear.
Spend an afternoon walking the grounds, window shop to your heart’s content, and be sure to plan ahead so you might enjoy one of their regular events. The weekend “Concert in the Plaza” offers danceable entertainment with a rotating calendar of live performers. Once a month, they even have a free movie showing right under the nighttime sky. Learn everything about Sugar Land Town Square.
I guess when we started I was talking drive market, but you can always skip the drive and just stay in Sugar Land. We like the Hilton Garden Inn Houston Hotel / Sugar Land. Located less than two miles from the Town Square, the HGI (as us hotel folk call it) is currently offering a family package to sweeten the deal.
