Not for the acrophobic, the famous Palm Spring Aerial Tramway is a two and a half mile climb in a hanging, spinning tramcar to a station in the San Jacinto Mountains over 8,500 ft. above sea level. To blackheart thrill seekers it’s a rollercoaster with no drop, but to us typical folk it’s an unrivaled outlook on the abundant majesty of Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley.
It’s also one of the biggest attractions in Palm Springs, California.
Once claimed to be the “8th Man-Made World Wonder”, the Tramway itself can be as impressive as the view. The tramcars, which hold up to 80 passengers and a driver, are the world’s largest, and at forty-two degrees the tramway achieves the world’s second steepest vertical cable rise.
After the eight and a half minute ascent (thrilling for some, peaceful for others), there’s plenty more to do at and around the mountain station. With Mount San Jacinto State Park at your feet, the adventurous outdoorsy types will love the miles of lush hiking trails to explore. For something special, take a free guided nature tour. There’s also a restaurant at the station.
Oh, and don’t forget to plan for all temperatures. Even if it’s 100 degrees on the desert floor, up in the mountains it cares not.
The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway runs year-round every day. Service begins at 10:00 a.m. and runs about every half-hour until 8:00 or 9:00 p.m. depending on the season. You can learn more about this attraction here.
For Palm Springs, CA hotels, it’s got to be the Wyndham Palm Springs. The resort is currently offering a package with breakfast and two tickets to the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, which is a $60-70 value. Check it out.
