Pet-Friendly Hotels in Virginia – Holiday Inn Alexandria Old Town

A Scottish Terrier named Alex is the city's mascot. This is not Alex, but he's probably close.

Okay, so dogs aren’t exactly explosions, but they are Man’s Best Friend. That counts, right?

The pet-friendly hotels we mentioned previously both offered a great value in fairly animal-friendly destinations, but neither came close to today’s selection: the Holiday Inn Alexandria – Historic District in Alexandria, Virginia.

It’s a double-whammy, really. Alexandria is remarkably dog-friendly, with an abundance of fenced and open dog parks, canine-centric attractions and an unparalleled level of freedom for dog-lovers and their pets throughout the city. The Holiday Inn Alexandria Hotel is the second whammy, being both affordable and accommodating to your animal.

First the location. Dog owners in Alexandria, Virginia have plenty to do with their furry friends, whether it’s bringing them along on a walking tour of historic Old Town or even Mount Vernon, or just sharing an afternoon with them in one of the many outdoor cafes along King Street. For something really unusual, the Potomac Riverboat Company offers canine cruises every Thursday during the summer (May-September).

Of course, dog parks, both contained and open, are a snap to find and always inexpensive when not free. The city Web site has detailed information.

Second is the hotel. The Holiday Inn Alexandria – Historic District is surprisingly reasonable at only $50 per pet (flat, non-refundable), and what’s more, they welcome large dogs, which you don’t see too often. All that combined with an Old Town location in walking distance of everywhere you want to be, and we really can’t recommend it enough for pet-friendly travel in Virginia near Washington, DC.
