Some might find those coastal Virginia mornings still a bit cool for comfort this time of year, but as the highs continue to rise, golfers on the east coast finally stir from their winter slumber and hit the links once more in Williamsburg. And ah, it feels good to be back!
Whatever it lacks in name recognition, Williamsburg makes up for in scenic, well-architected courses that favor the quality of the game and have the official commendations to back them up. Golf Williamsburg is a collection of 15 four star and above-rated championship-style Williamsburg golf courses, and with maps, directions, course information and even packages, it’s the only resource for golfing in Williamsburg, Virginia that you need.
(Did I just write myself out of my own blog?)
We can, however, recommend some worthwhile options:
The Golf Club at Brickshire
If imitation truly is the finest form of flattery, then The Golf Club at Brickshire is quite the metaphorical lothario. While the club boasts a full 18 holes of top-level golfing, what makes Brickshire unique is its four “replica” holes. In the realization of a fantasy that usually starts “If only I could…”, designer Curtis Strange replicated four of his favorite holes from around the world in his plans for Brickshire. Those courses are St. Andrews, Augusta National, Pinehurst #2 and Riviera CC. Not only do you get some of the best golfing in Williamsburg, you get some of the best golfing in the world (according to Curtis Strange :) ).
Golden Horseshoe Golf Club
When film critics throughout the country came together to say that The Curious Case of Benjamin Button was a good movie, they were wrong! Fortunately, golf critics seem to know what they’re talking about. That’s why they’ve showered the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club’s Gold Course with near endless acclaim. “4 ½ Stars”, “Top 100 to Play”, “America’s Choice”, “Top Public Course” – the awards and rankings have rolled in. Most memorable about the Gold, Green and Spotswood courses of the Golden Horseshoe is the total lack of real estate development. It’s just you, the ball, and the edifying purity of nature.
Additional Recommendations: You can check the Golf Williamsburg Web site for more information on all of the courses, but we also like the three Ford’s Colony courses. It’s a lot of variety for one destination. They’re offering some pretty good values at the moment, too.
As always, for Williamsburg, Virginia hotels we like the Crowne Plaza Williamsburg Hotel at Fort Magruder. It’s less than a mile from Colonial Williamsburg and not much further to a number of these area courses.
