Florida Attractions – Kennedy Space Center

In Cocoa Beach, Florida and surrounding areas, they have what you might call “Space Fever”. There’s Astronaut High School in Titusville, Challenger 7 Elementary School in Port St. John, Enterprise Elementary School in Cocoa, NASA Boulevard in Melbourne and Jupiter Elementary in Palm Bay, just to name a few examples. Local residents even petitioned, successfully, to have the local area code changed to “321″, mimicking a launch countdown when said aloud (”3-2-1″).

That just goes to show you the level of dedication the so-called Space Coast has to its most important attraction: The Kennedy Space Center. In its illustrious 40-plus year history, the Center is still best known for a fateful launch on July 16, 1969, and for the words that clutched a nation just four days later, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” Next time you’re in Florida, specifically the Orlando/Cocoa Beach/Cape Canaveral part of it, get caught up in the fervor, and experience a part of history, by visiting the Space Center for yourself.

Of course, you can’t just roam the grounds all willy-nilly. That’s why they have the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. An exciting aerospace museum blending artifacts with interactive exhibits, the Space Center Visitor Complex is one of the most popular attractions in Florida.

Exhibits and things to do are numerous:

  • Astronaut Encounter – A daily opportunity to meet a real life astronaut. Questions and cameras are welcomed.Space Shuttle
  • Rocket Garden – Trace the history of NASA through its most impressive creations – the rockets. Standing tall in a dramatic display, the rocket garden is a favorite for young and old.
  • Shuttle Launch Experience – If you’re being tied down, things are either going very well or very poorly indeed. For this intense launch simulation, strapping in is all a part of the show.
  • International Space Station Center – Get a hands-on feel for what the residents of the International Space Station contend with every single day.
  • Apollo / Saturn V Center – This large gallery is dedicated to the men and women who made the original moon landing possible.
  • Kennedy Space Center Tours – The highlight of most visits, this is your chance to tour the Kennedy Space Center, albeit in a strictly directed capacity. There’s a standard tour included with admission, or you can add specialty tours that take you even deeper into the facility.

This is just a sample of all there is to do. View a full list of attractions here.

If there’s a downside, and I’m not saying there is, it would be the price. Regular adult admission will run you $38, so we’re talking amusement park prices here. You do get a lot out of it though, and tickets are good for two days consecutive admission, so don’t feel like you have to cram it all in.

If you’re timing is superb, you can even view a live launch, though you’ll need to purchase tickets in advance. You can do that from the “Buy Tickets” page. Learn everything you could ever want to know about the Kennedy Space Center here.

The Kennedy Space Center is located at Cape Canaveral. For staying close by, we recommend the Holiday Inn Cocoa Beach Hotel in Cocoa Beach, Florida. It’s a consistent favorite for the whole family-friendly thing in Florida.

Despite being fifty or so miles away, the Kennedy Space Center is often considered an Orlando attraction, and who are we to disagree? For hotels in Orlando, we always recommend the Holiday Inn Orlando International Drive. Affordable, kid-friendly, well-located, good packages – what else do you need?
