Fourth of July in San Francisco, California
When it comes to top-notch 4th of July Celebrations, Californians certainly have their options open. But let’s face it; San Diego is, like, way down there. For you Central-North types, there’s also a spectacular Independence Day display in the City by the Bay: San Francisco, California.
Actually, there are several, but for the sake of getting on with our Friday (not that you don’t spend the whole day reading blogs and pretending to work anyway), we’ll stick to the best of the best – the Pier 39 Waterfront Celebration in Fisherman’s Wharf.

Boasting a full afternoon of entertainment climaxing in an uproarious 21-minute, orchestrated fireworks display in an awesome waterfront location, there’s no doubt that Pier 39 puts on the biggest and best show of the day. And they do it absolutely free.
Festivities start early. Rock group Take 2 hits the performance stage at 1:00 p.m. for a solid three hours of tunes. There’s a two-hour break before the next show, so take the opportunity to explore Pier 39 and the Wharf. Grab some dinner at one of the famous area restaurants, and foot it over to Ghirardelli Square for dessert at the Ghirardelli Ice Cream Shop. There’s endless fun to be had.
Starting at 6:00 p.m., the music stage will sparkle with profound glory that only 80’s cover band Tainted Love can deliver, so be sure to catch some of the set. Finally, at 9:30 p.m., the big show begins. Follow the signs for seating and viewing recommendations. If it interests you, the musical simulcast will be hosted on KISS FM 98.1.
So, in short: Fourth of July, Pier 39 in Fisherman’s Wharf, free admission, fireworks begin at 9:30 p.m. (but arrive early to get a seat).
If you’re traveling in and want to stay the night, maybe turn Independence Day weekend into an impromptu getaway, we’ve got a duo of Fisherman’s Wharf hotels that always treat us right.
They’re neighbors. Compare rates, compare specials, and simply pick the one that’s right for you.
Have fun!
