Windhaven Glider Rides – Santa Barbara, California Attractions

You already know, dear reader, that I try to keep it short and sweet on Fridays. Hey, I’m as excited about the weekend as you. But that doesn’t mean you won’t get the same quality finds. For the adventurous at heart, this is the attraction for you.

Windhaven Glider Rides puts those helicopter tours they always sell in exotic locations to shame. The next time you’re on the West Coast, or if you’re already there, head about 30 minutes north of beautiful Santa Barbara to the Santa Ynez Airport to find this high-flying attraction.

Windhaven Glider Rides

Take to the sky like never before in one of Windhaven Glider Rides’ fully-certified two-person gliders. Kiss the clouds as much as a mile above the ground and then … well, glide. No obnoxious engine grinding to sully the mood – just you, the vastness of the Santa Ynez Valley and the peaceful whisper of the wind. They call it the Magic of Silent Flight.

Windhaven Gliders offers three levels of service. The first takes you to 2,500 ft., just above the lower ridges of the Santa Ynez Coastal Mountain Range for some really spectacular views. Approximate flight time is 15 minutes. If you want more, the Mountain Adventure flight will take you above the highest peaks to 4,000 ft. on a 22-minute trip. More? Go for the premium Mile High Flight. True to the name, this flight takes you 5,280 ft. up as a stunning finale to the Mountain Adventure flight. That one lasts about 30 minutes.

Prices range from $125-245, and gliders hold one person (plus the pilot). Don’t forget your camera.

If hour after hour of corporate air travel has made you jaded to the astonishing feat that manned flight really is, a Windhaven Glider Ride is just what you need. Discover the true spirit of aviation. Flights are held on weekends, weather permitting, and take-off out of the Santa Ynez Airport. Learn more.

We like Santa Barbara, and we like staying in Santa Barbara. If you’d like to as well, one of our favorite Santa Barbara hotels is the Holiday Inn Santa Barbara – Goleta. They run a free Airport and Amtrak shuttle, offer free Internet, and the Holiday Inn Kids Eat Free Program. Nice rooms, too.

Have fun!

    Hi,
Quick question for you: do you allow people with private pilot licenses to rent your gliders so they can fly them themselves? Or are the only ones allowed to fly them are the pilots associated with your company?

I have a pilot license and I am looking for a place in Southern California that will allow me to rent a glider to take a ride with one other person? Thanks so much for your time.

    Dan

    Hi Dan, thanks for writing.

USA Travel Guide is not associated with Windhaven Glider Rides (we just like them a lot!); I’m not sure about their policy regarding this. I couldn’t find the answer on the Web site, so you’ll probably want to contact them with your question directly.

You can find their contact information here.

    Thanks again.
