28th Annual Biloxi Seafood Festival – September 12-13, 2009

How can a major event 28 years in the running not have a better Web site? The 28th Annual Biloxi Seafood Festival is a fantastic destination for anyone who loves fresh seafood, Gulf Coast-style (and who doesn’t?). Unfortunately, barely a month away, information is still coming up short, so this will just be an afternoon quickie for you gumbo fans out there.

At 50,000-75,000 attendees over two days, the Biloxi Seafood Festival is one of the largest events in Mississippi. That’s really no surprise. With all the sweet and savory succulence of the sea served up every which way to a real crawfish-craving crowd, how could you not want to come back every year with more friends in tow?

Yummy!

Naturally, this festival is all about the food. Fried shrimp, po’boys, seafood jambalaya, fried alligator tail, authentic regional gumbos, crab cakes and absolutely all the fixins – why oh why am I writing this so close to lunchtime? There’s also plenty of non-seafood comestibles for you land-lubbin’ mongrels.

The gumbo is of special note, as the Biloxi Seafood Festival is also the site of the Sun Herald Annual Gumbo Championship.  Amateur and professional teams bring their gobsmackingly-great gumbos to compete for fame and glory. The best part: for a small fee ($5-10), visitors are invited to sample the competition and choose their favorites. All the proceeds go to support Biloxi Chamber programs.

There’s plenty more: arts and crafts, live music, kids activities, usually a run or charity event of some kind, and free admission to the (big breath) Maritime & Seafood Industry Museum and J. L. Scott Marine Education Center. All good stuff.

The 28th Annual Biloxi Seafood Festival will be held September 12-13, 2009 at Biloxi Town Green at the city center. The Web site is woefully under-informed, but here it is.

Where to stay? We’re consistently drawn to the Ocean Club at Biloxi because we know the people and have always enjoyed it in the past. The Ocean Club offers short-term condominium-style rentals ideal for Mississippi Gulf Coast vacation for one week or one month. Check it out.

Have fun!

Hi Mary, thanks for writing in.

While I suspect you might be too late, it’s certainly worth a look. Alas, I am just the messenger.

If you want to talk to someone about showing at the festival, you can find the contact information here.
