Fleet Week San Diego 2009 – Events and Hotels

The honorable Fleet Week celebration has already sailed through the Big Apple, and now it’s set course to the West Coast and home of the original Fleet Week in 1935, San Diego.

Fleet Week San Diego 2009 is here, and we sure hope you get out there, have some fun and show your support for our brave sailors. Increasingly misnamed, Fleet Week San Diego is not a week at all but rather a two-month cascade of events, parties, competitions, activities and shows.

The festivities kick-off tomorrow night with the annual Star Spangled Salute, a super-upscale fundraising dinner and black tie event the Military Maritime Services. With limited attendance, you’ll be lucky to get in at this point, but in this economy, $200 is a little much to spend on dinner. Not to worry, there’s still lots to come.

Highlights of Fleet Week San Diego 2009 include:

• Fleet Week Baseball Game – August 20 – The San Diego Padres will take on the St. Louis Cardinals at Petco Park with special military programming during the game.
• Coronado Speed Festival – September 26-27 – “The Race at the Base”, this popular car show is held at the Naval Air Station North Island and features an incredible array of vintage and high-performance vehicles. Learn more.
• Navy Ship Tours – September 26-27 – While at the Speed Festival, take the chance to tour a Navy destroyer or amphibious assault vehicle.
• MCAS Miramar Air Show – October 2-4 – A humongous event, Fleet Week or not. This year the crowd-favorite Blue Angels are joined by Canadian jet demonstration team, The Snowbirds. This show is often ranked as the best air show in the world. Learn more.

Fleet Week San Diego 2009 starts tomorrow, August 15, with weekly events through October 21, though some are military-only, so read carefully. Make time for the nation’s largest celebration of our military. Start here.
