I’ll admit, we started a little tame with Halloween Time at Disneyland, but the bloody gloves are coming off now. The Haunt at Knott’s Scary Farm is the real deal. Not just America’s first haunted theme park attraction; it’s one of the best.
Which might come as a surprise. Honestly, we’re fans of Knott’s Berry Farm here at USA Travel Guide, but it certainly doesn’t make us think hardcore. We think family and history and Snoopy. Well, starting September 24 at sundown, the attractions at Knott’s Scary Farm will have you thinking, “Will I survive the night?”
The Haunt at Knott’s Scary Farm is simply humongous. The park-wide complex of scares features thirteen fright mazes, three unique “scare zones” and six stage shows ranging from the creep-tastic to the utterly bizarre. Thankfully they’ve kept a minimum age limit of 13 on The Haunt, so they have the freedom to make it intense.
The mazes are the biggest draw and the bulk of the experience. Despite an incredible thirteen to explore, each delivers its own attitude, atmosphere and one-of-a-kind brand of thrills. Obviously, we haven’t had the chance to check out the four new mazes, though “Lockdown: The Asylum” sounds sufficiently horrifying, but the L.A. crowd definitely has its favorite returning haunts. No joke, the “Doll Factory” is genuinely frightful, that is if you are scared of dolls like most people. “The Slaughterhouse” features chainsaws, always a favorite, and “Club Blood” has got an electro-goth theme right out of Blade.
Do yourself a favor, and take the time to read the attraction descriptions on the Web site. They’re really very well written, and they get you in the mood for some macabre thrills.
The scare zones are essentially sections of the park decorated to fit a theme, be it a haunted ghost town or “CarnEvil”, a nightmarish carnival gone to hell. Like the mazes, each zone is worth the visit.
The Haunt at Knott’s Scary Farm runs from September 24 – October 31, excluding Mondays and Tuesdays. This is a special, separate-admission event, and the sheer size of the event does come with a price tag. Pre-sale admission prices start at $31.99 and vary by day. Gate admission is $53.99, so think ahead. Evenings almost always sell out, so there’s another incentive to get your tickets early. Learn more about it all here.
This is more of a local attraction, so we’ll stick to area hotels we’ve mentioned in the past:
- Crowne Plaza Redondo Beach
- Holiday Inn Express Costa Mesa
- Holiday Inn LAX Airport
- Radisson Suites Hotel Covina
Have a creepy good time at Knott’s Scary Farm 2009!

Hi Christian,
Knott’s Scary Farm runs through October 31. Depending on the day you visit, attractions close at either 1:00 a.m. or 2:00 a.m.
They’re running a bunch of specials now, especially for groups, so it’s a great time to go if you’ve got one.
Have fun.
