Most Oktoberfest celebrations take place primarily in September, some running over a week or two into October, and some not. I always wondered if that was how it’d always been, or if the American jumpstart culture had finally gotten so ahead of itself, we’d just gone ahead and bumped up the holiday. I was in Garden Ridge just last night and they had a full Christmas section … on September 7th. I think it’s only a matter of time before we start moving the day.
But enough of that. I must be feeling talkative after my day off. What I’m really here to talk about is a particularly cool Oktoberfest event coming soon to Southern California’s rustic Big Bear Lake. Experience the hallowed pastime of getting drunk in the woods and enjoy a fun weekend getaway while you’re at it.
Big Bear Lake Oktoberfest celebrates its 39th shindig this year with fun-filled weekend gatherings running from September 19 to October 31, 2009. All the traditional fanfare is on tap (ba dum pshhh). Beer gardens, official beer drinking contests, unofficial beer drinking contests, live music, polka dancing, arts and crafts, clogging, stein holding contests and plenty more.

Despite a reputation for rowdy fun, Big Bear Lake Oktoberfest is a family-friendly affair. In the past, guests under 21 have been welcomed to enter until 6:00 p.m. Also, while those under 21 are no longer admitted after 6:00 p.m., those already in attendance are not asked to leave. Special children’s attractions include the Kids Zone featuring games and a petting zoo and also special kids-only competitions.
Not to mention all there is for fun-lovers of any age. Log sawing competitions tend to draw the crowds, as does row after row of greasy-great German food. From bratwurst to schnitzel to strudel, that famous German efficiency is evident in the flavor department. Finally, most guests love to walk the Budenstrasse, the long avenue of vendor booths featuring everything from original art to handmade steins (and pretty much everything in between).
Oh yeah, and there’s beer. Lots and lots and lots of beer.
Big Bear Lake Oktoberfest takes place every Saturday and Sunday from September 19 through October 31, 2009. Events and entertainment varies by the day. Door prices haven’t been announced, but the advanced tickets are listed as a discount at $12 for Saturday, $6 for Sunday. You’ll find an opportunity to order tickets and learn everything else you want to know here.
We say make a weekend out of it. Travel in Friday afternoon, check out the ‘fest Saturday or Sunday, and then use the other day to enjoy all the outdoorsy goodness of Big Bear. While you do it, relax easy with a stay at Northwoods Resort in Big Bear Lake. Our favorite vacation resort in the area, Northwoods Resort is always competitively priced, and we dig the scenic Adirondack style.
They also tend to offer an abundance of specials, which we like to see.
Have fun!
