Equine Affaire in Pomona, California – February 4-7, 2010

My wife seems to like most animals, but she has a particular infatuation with two: giant squids (especially krakens) and gray ponies with spots. Today’s featured attraction will probably come up short on cephalopods, but just might be the answer to the latter.

After all, with hundreds of horses on showcase over four short days, Equine Affaire is Pomona, California is one of the year’s top events for horse enthusiasts. In fact, if you ask them, the organizers at Equine Affaire will tell you it’s the “Nation’s Premier Equine Exposition & Equestrian Gathering.” We can’t find grounds to disagree.

Be at the Pomona Fairplex from February 4-7, 2010 for a relentless schedule of breed demonstrations, training clinics, trade shows, special presentations and vendor exhibitions. It’s all aimed at one thing: horses. How to raise them, how to train them, how to take care of them, and how to have fun together.

The dozens of clinics run the gamut from basics of caretaking and livelihood to intensely detailed equestrian sessions like “Problem Specific Corrections for Better Barrel Racing” and “Easier Ways to Achieve Lateral Flexion”. And the schedule really is non-stop, with back-to-back clinics in five venues and not a single repeat. Before you go, you’ll want to check the schedule.

If your interest is more casual, then many of the technical clinics won’t be for you. However, Craig Cameron’s Extreme Cowboy Race™ most certainly is. Hosted Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, this 3-day championship pits the exceptional riders and their horses against a fierce obstacle course designed to test the skills of rider and horse alike. Competitors are judged on finishing time and quality of performance, with the best advancing each day until a champion is crowned on Saturday evening. For those of you thinking a horse show should be all about horses doing amazing things, this is the event for you.

Equine Affaire will be hosted at the Pomona Fairplex in Pomona, California from February 4-7, 2010. Advanced tickets are available through this Friday, Jan. 8, and cost $16 per day or at a combo multi-day discount of $40 or $50. Learn more.

For hotels near Pomona Fairplex, we again recommend the Radisson Suites Hotel Covina. The hotel is located about 5 miles out from the Fairplex and they’re currently offering a discounted rate for attendees of the Equine Affaire. Just mention the event when calling to make reservations.

Can’t Wait?
You actually don’t have to. The Sierra Empire Arabian Horse Association will hold their 35th Annual Show at the Pomona Fairplex just a week earlier, January 29-31, 2010. Come just to see these impressive top-of-breed animals, or sign up soon to compete. More here.

The Radisson is offering discounted rates for this even as well.

Have fun!
