Enjoy Free Winter Weekdays at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden

The Brooklyn Botanic Garden is never exactly prohibitive – let’s see, Tuesdays are free, Fridays are free for seniors, children are free, school groups are free, even Saturday afternoons are free for a couple hours – but in the chilly months of winter, they say “Screw it!” just about altogether.

From November 17, 2009 to March 2, 2010, all weekdays are free at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. Take advantage of the flexibility and visit the still surprisingly robust wintertime sprawl of these historic, century-old gardens.

As they must, the BBG’s exhibits shift with the seasons. Well, not so much the exhibits as the things you’ll see in them. This time of year, the garden’s vast collection of conifers and evergreens almost steal the day, outdone only by that nature-defying showoff, the Everblooming Cherry. Vibrant orchids are at the peak of their bloom, too, in the Aquatic House of the Steinhardt Conservatory. This is the place to find exotic flowers from the world over at any time of year. See what’s in bloom.

2010 marks the 100th anniversary of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, and they’re celebrating the accomplishment with a fun and fascinating exhibit at the Steinhardt Conservatory Gallery. “Brooklyn Botanic Garden Now and Then” takes visitors on a photographic journey through the history of the gardens. Stunning stills from two of the BBG’s official photographers capture how much the gardens have changed and just how much they have stayed the same. The exhibit is free, of course, and open until January 31, 2010. Learn more and see pics.

After that, the Gallery is given over to “Visions of Nature 2010: Classes at the Gardens”. This annual program showcases teacher and students artists who draw inspiration from the grounds. View upcoming exhibits.

The Brooklyn Botanic Garden is open daily except for Mondays and will be offering free admission every weekday through March 2, 2010. If you must go on a weekend, the regular admission is $8, or you can purchase a combo ticket at $16 which also includes admission to the adjacent Brooklyn Museum (which if not together, you should see some time). Learn more.

Stay convenient to Brooklyn and just a few miles from the Botanic Garden at the Holiday Inn New York – JFK Airport Hotel. The hotel offers a 24-hour shuttle to/from JFK Airport and complimentary high-speed Internet.

Have fun at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden!
