Fisherman’s Wharf – Family Things to Do in San Francisco, CA

Southern California steals most of the thunder when it comes to family fun on the West Coast. After all, Los Angeles has Disneyland, Universal Studios, Hollywood, Knott’s Berry Farm, etc, etc, etc. And San Diego, man, what isn’t there to do in San Diego?  Family vacations and San Diego are like peas and carrots.

But USA Travel Guide has been there before. We’ve done Disneyland, we’ve done the San Diego Zoo. It’s time for the Northern California to get its due. It’s time to check out Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco, California.

Fisherman's Wharf Sign

San Francisco’s most popular tourist destination won’t “wow” you with any theme park thrills, but Fisherman’s Wharf still has no shortage of things to do with the whole family. The Wharf is a waterfront entertainment district bustling with celebrated attractions, delectable dining, shopping and more than a couple famous sights. San Fran’s iconic sea lions, for instance, like to hang out at Pier 39 in Fisherman’s Wharf. Let’s see what else you can find:

  • Pier 39 – the marquee Fisherman’s Wharf attraction, Pier 39 is a lively destination known for delicious seafood restaurants, the aquarium, the carousel and street performers
  • Aquarium of the Bay – world-class aquarium known for its impressive shark collection (like a Bond villain just waiting to happen)
  • Ripley’s Believe It or Not – the only “odditorium” in North Cali
  • San Francisco Maritime National Historic Park – the only thing longer than the list of incredible sea vessels is the name of the park. We love the USS Pampanito submarine.
  • The Wax Museum – except for the awful Will Smith, really a very good collection
  • Cannery Shopping Center – a diverse selection of shops and eateries to peruse
  • Ghirardelli Square – I think you could debate whether this urban chic shopping center is really part of the Wharf, but we’ll take it. Learn more about Ghirardelli Square.

And remember, Chinatown and the Financial District aren’t that far off, so if you actually manage to exhaust your options in Fisherman’s Wharf (almost impossible), there are plenty of other things to do in San Francisco.

Naturally, you’ll want to stay close to the Wharf to maximize your time and fun. In walking distance would be even better:

Family-travel made easy with a full-service, affordable stay just a few blocks from Fisherman’s Wharf. The famous San Francisco Cable Line runs right next door to the hotel, so you can hop on and go any time to explore San Fran sans car. We like the Aquarium of the Bay Package.

The Holiday Inn Express has a lot of the same credential as our full-service suggestion above. Terrific location near the Wharf, affordable rates (even more so, in fact), and a secure, family-friendly feel that those of you traveling with younger children especially will appreciate. The two are more or less sister properties, and they carry the same San Francisco vacation packages.

Have fun at Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco, California.
