Celebrate our Military – Fleet Week 2010 at Port Everglades, Florida

In the past we’ve covered Fleet Weeks in San Francisco, San Diego and even New York City. I’d say it’s about time this awesome tradition sailed on down to South Florida. Besides, what better chance to field fallen Representative Eric Massa’s challenge to “ask the 10,000 guys I served with in the Navy”?

Okay, so maybe it’s closer to 1,000 guys (and girls) who attend Fleet Week in Port Everglades, but nevertheless this annual shindig is a big deal. Civilians have the chance to meet and celebrate members from every wing of our naval services – U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Marines – as well as enjoy a number of anticipated public events.

USS Iwo Jima

For the sailors, Fleet Week promises some much needed shore leave and a chance to connect with the community on a more one-to-one level. But from the civilian perspective, the heart of Fleet Week in Port Everglades is always in the Ship Tours.

So far six ships have been announced for Fleet Week 2010, with at least a couple more promised:

  • USS Iwo Jima – U.S. Amphibious
  • USS Halyburton – U.S. Frigate
  • USS Porter – U.S. Destroyer
  • FGS Hessen – German Frigate
  • HSMC Montreal – Canadian Frigate

A Coast Guard vessel and a U.S. submarine are expected to join the ranks very soon.

Because of the limited tour space and often huge turnout, Fleet Week organizers require that your register for your tour in advance. Even worse, you can only tour ONE ship. Other stuff to know: minimum age of 8 years, must be in good physical condition, not handicapped accessible, tours last about 50 minutes. View tour hours and start the registration process here.

The Fleet Week 2010 Port Everglades schedule is still coming together, so it’s a bit up in the air, but additional events to look forward to are the sensational welcome party, the annual Fleet Week Golf Classic (sponsor a team) and live music events. Fleet Week 2010 at Port Everglades runs from April 26 – May 2, 2010 at Port Everglades in Broward County, Florida.
