Spring Break Vacations in Mexico – Puerto Morelos

Some of you are returning from Spring Break, and some are just now beginning. And still others among you are waiting patiently for next week, the week after that, or even the week after that (!)

Fret not, my friends. As the Food Network’s Alton Brown likes to say, your patience will be rewarded. We’ve got a fun Mexico vacation destination that you might not have heard of today, and for you late Spring Breakers, there’s still plenty of time to make the call.

Welcome to Puerto Morelos and the always-personable Acamaya Reef Cabañas and Beach Club. Though just 11 miles from the electric energy of Cancún, the vivid waters and calm, quaint spirit of Puerto Morelos and Acamaya Reef promise a whole different kind of Caribbean escape.

Acamaya Reef

Let me set the right scene: the bountiful beachfront along the northern stretch of Puerto Morelos is no stranger to mega-resorts, but Acamaya Reef is no mega-resort. In fact, the club has only six cabañas, each of them uniquely designed, decorated and equipped. And the dining doesn’t feature some corporate-collaborated menu written exclusively to increase your bar tab. Your dinner is cooked, on request, by Denis, Acamaya’s owner. And the walls are fitted not with meticulously-tailored “authenticity”, but with Denis’ own artwork, the artwork of a man who once worked in a pottery studio for Pablo Picasso (and he’d love to tell you about it!)

The simplicity is one of the true pleasures of Acamaya Reef. In fact, you don’t even have to pay for the cabaña if you don’t want to. Acamaya’s most popular lodging option is its beachfront campsite. Even if you throw in with friends on a room somewhere in Cancún, you’ll be hard-pressed to beat $15 a night at Acamaya Reef.

The beautiful private beach is at the heart of your stay. It’s a calmer atmosphere than the stereotypical “MTV” Spring Break. A little swim and a lot of sun can easily take up a day or two, but when you find yourself reaching for more, you’ll find it! The snorkel and scuba office is next door, along with kayaking and windsurfing. You can catch a tour to the Mayan Ruins, explore the famous Xcaret nature park and most importantly, go shopping at Puerto Morelos.

And of course, if you want “MTV”, Cancún proper is just miles away.

Acamaya Reef Cabañas and Beach Club is located 11 miles from Cancún International Airport just off of MEX 307 (turn left at Kilometer 29). Call or e-mail to make reservations. Visit the Web site.

Stay far from the bustle of normal Spring Break beach vacations, but not too far, at Acamaya Reef Cabañas near Puerto Morelos, Mexico.

Have fun!
