Just off the coast of Newport Beach in Southern California there’s a manmade paradise where the streets are lined with charming two-stories and everyone knows everyone. A place where the lazy haze of afternoon is a long-term tenant, and the idea of heaven is a cool outfit, some comfy shoes and a bag of saltwater taffy.
Okay, so I’m exaggerating a little bit. In fact, once the tourists float in, and they do, Balboa Island can be downright hectic. That’s no reason the pass up your chance to be one of them, though. The next time you’re in way-South Cali, consider a visit to the surprisingly understated manmade marvel that is Balboa Island.
Though technically part of Newport, Balboa Island is self-contained in a lot of ways. The community is tight knit, has its own customs, and is pleasingly individual even though surrounded by mainland on all but one side. The Island is densely packed as well, one of the highest capita per area destinations in the country. Despite the often humble homesteads, Balboa’s value is no slouch, with lots as small as 35×85 going for millions.

What’s there to do? On any day of the week, the pleasure of Balboa Island is in admiring the scenery, sampling a few local specialties and window-shopping to your heart’s content. The main shopping drag, Marine Avenue, houses up to 100 boutique retailers, everything from art galleries to clothing to gift shops. Just don’t be expecting the bargain bin – Balboa Island loves tourists, and it is not low-end.
The summer is an especially good time to visit Balboa Island, because there always seems to be something special going on. Island-wide garage sales, a live music art walk, pancake breakfasts, July 4th boat parade, sand castle contest, and most importantly, the annual Balboa Island Parade. The beloved parade is the biggest event of the year. They close off the Island (by closing the bridge) and then stir up quite the colorful ruckus with marching bands, drill teams, floats, classic cars, local “dignitaries” and just about every dog on the Island.
If you’re interested in the Balboa Island Parade, this year’s event will be held on Sunday, June 6, 2010. The parade runs from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., but remember they do close the island, so you’ll want to arrive early.
Speaking of arriving – there are two ways to get to Balboa Island: drive the two-lane bridge (exit near Pacific Coast Highway) or ride the quick Balboa Island ferry.
