New Orleans is such a musical city already, that in order to outdo the everyday with some music festival, they have to do it a little bigger and a little better. For the last 40 years, that’s just what they’ve done. Enter the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, also known as Jazz Fest.
Jazz might be all over the main stage, but it’s New Orleans herself that is the star. The rich flavors, happy sounds and bold personalities of the Big Easy come together at this eclectic festival in one dazzling explosion of life. You can forget Mardi Gras – this is the true New Orleans experience right here.
The Jazz Fest nickname can be a little misleading. There’s a lot more than jazz going on here. You’ll also find blues, R&B, gospel, zydeco, folk, Latin, rock, rap, bluegrass and country just to name a few. That’s on top of just about every flavor of jazz. The hard part, really, is deciding just what to see and when. Along with various event stages, parades, vendor booths, and all the food, there are eleven music stages, most all of them hopping at the same time.

There are hundreds of acts across the 7 days of the festival, but here are a few highlights:
- April 23: The Black Crowes, George Clinton
- April 24: Simon & Garfunkel, My Morning Jacket
- April 25: Allman Brothers Brand, Keely Smith
- April 29: Elvis Costello, Blues Traveler
- April 30: Aretha Franklin, Derek Trucks, Gipsy Kings
- May 1: Pearl Jam, Jeff Beck, Marcus Miller
- May 2: Van Morrison, B.B. King

And don’t forget about the food! This is New Orleans after all. Enjoy classic festival favorites, or take this chance to sample some of the more local delights: alligator pie, fried green tomatoes, muffuletta, Cajun duck, po-boys, boudin, crawfish, cracklins, stuffed breads, beignets, pralines … this list could go on.
The 2010 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival will take place April 23-25 and April 29 – May 2, 2010 at the Fair Grounds Race Course in New Orleans. The grounds are located about 10 minutes from the famous New Orleans French Quarter. Tickets are on sale now. Learn more here.

Along with the pleasing décor – befitting its historic status – the Chateau offers a terrific French Quarter location and fine amenities. It’s one of our favorite hotels in New Orleans for sure.

For many Jazz Fest attendees, the crawfish bread is almost as memorable as the musical experience. Country Roads magazine recently featured John Ed Laborde, creator of the beloved crawfish bread. Visit http://www.countryroadsmagazine.com and search for “crawfish bread” for the story.
