Spoleto Festival USA 2010 in Charleston, SC

Popular entertainment in this country owes more to the Old World than remakes of British reality shows (which are almost never as good, by the way). Throughout the country, especially in “historic” destinations, you’re sure to find something borrowed. Take Charleston, South Carolina, a charming fusion of Old and New that, as usual, gets things just right.

Every year around late May, Charleston hosts the Spoleto Festival USA, an acclaimed arts festival and fitting tribute to Chucktown’s sister city: Spoleto, Italy. Over fifty years ago, the otherwise unassuming Italian township was selected to host the Festival of the Two Worlds, which brought together world-renowned masters and up-and-coming artists for never-before-seen performances. Today, Charleston keeps the spirit of the original alive here in the states.

Spoleto Festival USA maintains the “latest-meets-greatest” format to an extent, but it also stretches well beyond that. This is one of the top art and culture festivals in the country.

Spoleto Festival (Not 2010, so don't mind the dates)

For 17 days, the Charleston Historic District is overrun with singers, musicians, actors, artists and, of course, thousands upon thousands of fans. The list of performers and genres truly runs the gamut: theater, ballet, contemporary dance, jazz, chamber music, choir, orchestra, West African strings, photography, visual art, artists talks, musical theater and even opera has a place. Every day the festival hosts at least a half-dozen performances around the district, and it’s often many, many more.

Keep in mind that like a film festival, the Spoleto Festival USA charges admission by presentation, only here there’s no option of an all-access pass. You’ll have to select your shows and purchase advance tickets individually. Sell-outs are a reasonable threat, especially on the weekend shows, so buy early and, if possible, buy for the weekday shows. You’re more likely to get great tickets, and if you’re traveling in, your accommodations are likely to be cheaper.

The Spoleto Festival USA 2010 will be hosted at several venues in Charleston, South Carolina from May 28 – June 13. Tickets are on-sale now. Learn more.

Speaking of accommodations, there’s no finer hotel in Charleston, SC than the historic Mills House. In fact, it’s the hotel that the Mayor of Spoleto, Italy prefers. The superlative service ensures a faultless stay, while the stately, storied ambiance of the property fits that spirit of the festival wonderfully. The fact that it’s located in the historic district in walking distance to several venues helps, too. Consider the Charleston vacation packages.

Have fun at the 2010 Spoleto Festival USA.
