Fishing for $50K – Big Bear Lake Trout Tournament

You know, fishermen and I have a lot in common. We both like boats, we both possess a penchant for hats, and we both prefer our fish as fresh as can be. However, we do differ on one critical point. Fishermen are convinced that fish come from the water, while I’m convinced that the natural state of fish is tucked and rolled between luxurious pillows of sushi rice.

If you belong to this first group, now’s the time to make a little cash off that hobby. On this upcoming June 5 and 6, Big Bear Lake, California will host the Fishing for $50K Trout Tournament. All adroit anglers, or anyone with a little luck on his side, should sign up for a chance to win $50,000 and other sweet prizes.

Big Bear Lake

The rules are simple. On the mornings of June 5 and 6, all participating fisherman (or women/children) cruise out onto beautiful Big Bear Lake and cast their lines with only one fish in mind: the single solitary trout tagged with the 50K-winning marker. The line casting part is important. This is an honest rod-and-reel tournament. No netting, snatching, or slapstick-style bombing allowed.

Because it’s entirely possible no one will win the 50 Gs, that’s hardly the only prize. There are an additional 9 winning fish bearing special tags, and both days of the tournament a $500 cash award will be handed out for the heaviest adult male, adult female, child male and child female. I’m still referring to fish in that last sentence.

Additional raffle prizes include several rod and reel combos, Rapala and Luhr Jensen lures and Flambeau tackle boxes. If you wish to compete, be sure to review the rules carefully. See them here.

Seems like an easy sell, this one. Gorgeous scenery, a fun day of fishing, and a chance that maybe, just maybe, you’ll drive away with an extra 50,000 bucks in your pocket (minus taxes). You could say the $40 entry fee is a deterrent, but you’d be silly to pay it. Get the most of your trip, stay on-site at Big Bear Lake, and get the contest organizers to pay your entry for you.

If you book your stay at an official Big Bear Lake Resort Association lodging through the Tournament Web site, you receive free entry for just about everyone eligible contestant in your room. Here’s our favorite:

There’s just a lot to like about the Northwoods Resort: the Adirondack-inspired décor, the excellent on-site restaurant, lots of room options and a great location near the lake. At six in the morning, as you cast your first line of the day, you might not be thinking much on what six o’clock that night is going to feel like. But when evening comes, you’ll be glad you chose a full-service place like the Northwoods.

Have fun at the Fishing for $50K Trout Tournament in Big Bear Lake!
