Memorial Day is less than a month out now, and that means so is Fleet Week 2010 in New York City. In a city home to hundreds of major annual events, this sensational tradition since 1984 continues to be one of the best. Don’t miss this chance to learn all about it firsthand.
This year, Fleet Week NYC will run from May 26 – June 2 and, as always, will bring in thousands of our Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen for something approximating time off. Well, “approximating” because if you look at the event schedule, the lads and ladies of our naval armed forces appear even busier than ever.

Fleet Week Ship Tours
Since the original occasion all the way back in 1935 San Diego, the heart of Fleet Week has been ship tours. Proud and thoroughly fascinated civilians we’re invited on to view the various battleships over 70 years ago, and that’s still how it’s done today.
Much to the consternation of many Fleet Week goers, the ships are separated into two sites: Manhattan and Staten Island. In 2010, as always, the strong majority of the ships will dock at the Stapleton waterfront at Staten Island, but the most popular tour ship will again dock at the New York Passenger Ship Terminal. The USS Iwo Jima, Wasp-class amphibious assault ship, is a returning guest of Fleet Week and always a crowd favorite.
Tour ships also include:
- USS James E Williams – Arleigh Burke-class destroyer
- USS Philippine Sea – Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser
- USS Tempest – Cyclone-class coastal patrol ship
- USCGC Campbell – medium endurance cutter (U.S. Coast Guard)
- HMCS Athabaskan – Iroquois-class destroyer (Canadian Navy)
See all the ships at Fleet Week NYC 2010.
Fleet Week Events
The humongous USS Iwo Jima stands proud, but it’s not the only reason to choose Manhattan for Fleet Week. The Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum, located at Pier 86, is the official hub of Fleet Week, hosting many of the week’s most popular public events.

It’s a great place to see the opening Parade of Ships, as well as view all the pier displays put on by the sailors throughout the week.
Major public events at the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum include:
- Broadway Showcase, May 28 – including performances by the casts of Memphis, Promises Promises, American Idiot, and The Adams Family
- Intrepid Summer Movie Series “Kick-Off”, May 28 – the movie is “Top Gun”
- Wicked, May 29 – catch a special performance of the massive Broadway hit
- Tug of War, May 29 – the annual contest continues
- Memorial Day Ceremony, May 31 – a reverent and dazzling memorial celebration co-hosted by the museum and military
See the Fleet Week event schedule at the Intrepid.
Of course, we’re still overlooking dozens of Fleet Week NYC events happening all over the city – golf tournaments, parades, observations, special displays and demos, karaoke parties. Point is, you simply can’t experience all of Fleet Week, so plan ahead, pick your spots and get the most of it. Learn about everything Fleet Week 2010.

Thanks for sharing this info. We have been there last year and I think it is a best time visit to New York City because I saw the city was less crowded during this event and the many hotels offer good packages.
Best Regards,
