Hotels & Resorts: Travel Tips by Those in the Know

Pageant of the Masters in Laguna Beach, CA

Every now and then, USA Travel Guide makes a sheepish attempt to class up the joint. The Getty Museum, the Spoleto Festival in Charleston, a little food and wine – serious bust-out-your-monocle stuff. Today, however, we set a new benchmark for even our own fastidious and foppish selves: The Pageant of the Masters in Laguna Beach, California.

Don’t let an ostentatious intro fool you, the Pageant of the Masters is actually very cool; a treat for fans of art, performance and, well, something different. The Pageant is the standout star of the larger Festival of Arts, which is free to residents of Laguna Beach and dirt cheap for everyone else. The festival is in most ways what you’d expect – stunning galleries, features on local artists, a juried competition, live music and overall just a great time down near the beach.

Pageant of the Masters

With the Pageant of the Masters, however, festival organizers have discovered something much more. Here’s how it works: every night, costumed actors recreate famous paintings to the finest detail. The stirring exposition of these “living pictures” is then set to a live orchestra, live narration and scenic lighting. You’ll literally see the iconic works of masters classical and contemporary come to life right before your eyes.

It’s the kind of thing that, well, you just need to see for yourself.

This year, the theme is “Eat, Drink and Be Merry”. Exuberant works of music, dance, drinking and others joys of life and friendship provide the material for what is sure to be one of the Pageant’s most fun and lighthearted shows yet.

Another cool thing about the Pageant of the Masters is that it’s no rush. This isn’t a one-time deal. The Pageant is held nightly for nearly two months during the summer festival season. This year, the Pageant will run from July 7 – August 31, 2010. The show always starts at 8:30 and features a changing line-up of performance pieces throughout the season. View more.

The Pageant of the Masters is held in Laguna Beach on Laguna Canyon Road just moments from the coast. Parking is ample, but very busy (there’s a lot going on). In short, allow time for it. Learn more.

Most of us who think of attending Pageant Of The Masters performances, we’re faced with the lack of tickets or the sky-rocked prices. Lately, I was recommended ticketsinventory.com to compare and purchase tickets and found it interesting. You may want to check.
