After all, the Red Bull Flugtag is a celebration of everything that Americans hold dear: ingenuity, competition, aviation and funny outfits. It’s the kind of nonsense that sites like YouTube were made for. It’s also about to kickoff its 20th season here in the USA.
The Red Bull Flugtag is a flying competition, though the world record is only 195 feet. How can that be? Well, it makes more sense when you see what the competitors are flying. The vehicles are homemade, lightweight and, by the rules, made from eco-friendly unsinkable materials. They also might not resemble anything that flies. In fact, they may not fly. At all. (Most don’t.)
The spirit of the Red Bull Flugtag is in the creativity. When you get a group of smart, committed guys and girls together to create an unpowered flying machine, ask not how far it will fly, ask what you can make it look like. The Starship Enterprise? Naturally. A British Pub Scene? Go for it. A 15-Foot Vertical Strongman? Why not! In this contest, a team with a great idea and a little bit of dazzle has just a good a chance as the team that racks up the most hang-time. It’s really kind of beautiful, in its own way.
