Cape Fear Blues Festival – Wilmington, NC

The season of music festivals marches on, and we’re calling out another favorite in this afternoon quickie. For true-blooded blues fans, the Cape Fear Blues Festival in Wilmington, North Carolina is simply one of the best. Coming up on its 15th annual festival, it’s the Cape Fear Blues Society’s culminating event, the masthead on another year of good folk, good blues and good times.

Head in to Wilmington from July 23-25, 2010 and see for yourself what all the ruckus is about.

The Cape Fear Blues Festival is atypical. The all-day, festival-style jam is reserved for the final day of the festival, giving the first two evenings over to bluesy one-offs that add a little scene to the show. The favorite, and most unusual, has got to be the opening night “Cape Fear Blues Cruise”. Those lucky enough to score tickets enjoy a scenic two-hour cruise aboard the Henrietta III riverboat set the thumping sounds of three blues bands. Three decks, three bars, tasty good food – it’s really a wonderful night for fans of music and merriment (and who isn’t?).

Day two starts with a free blues workshop at Finklestein Music, but you’ll want to head quick after to Legion Stadium for the Festival Concert. Many of the top acts of the festival hit the stage during this lengthy ticketed concert.

Finally, on the last day of the festival, they open the flood gates for the All-Day Blues Jam at Legion Stadium. This free concert showcases a sprawling lineup of regional musicians – a perfect opportunity to discover a new favorite as well as pick up a copious supply of merch. You can usually meet the performers as well.

A lot of great names at the Cape Fear Blues Festival, across all the events: Mac Arnold & Plate Full ‘O Blues, Bill Wharton, Tampa Blue, Ten Dollar Thrill, The Dynamic Therm-O-Tones, Jen & Tonic, Spider Mike Bochey and the Cape Fear Blues Jam Band among them.
