Here in Texas, we take our fairs very seriously. In fact, the Texas State Fair right here in Dallas is the largest state fair in the country. Local news crews from all over the nation drop by to see what we’re doing, and, more importantly, what we’re eating.
But I have to tell you, the month-long, million-plus in attendance L.A. County Fair at Pomona Fairplex in California is sure giving us a run for our money. It’s got everything: horseracing, big name concerts, art galleries, midway games, world-traveling museum exhibits, a circus, petting zoo, culinary competitions, stunt dog shows, marching bands, pirates, outrageous food, miles of shopping……..and that’s maybe half of it!
Live thoroughbred horseracing is always a major part of the Fair, and the 2010 L.A. County Fair will be no exception. From September 9 – 27, race fans will gallop in to Fairplex Park for 15 days of thrilling competition, not to mention free grandstand seating and clubhouse admission. And if you love the action but crave something different, drop in September 11 for live wiener dog racing. Learn more.
Obviously, we can’t possibly cover all the attractions at the L.A. County Fair, so we’ve handpicked a few highlights that you won’t want to miss (additional admission may apply):

- A Pirate’s Life – if there are pirates involved, I’m recommending it! This double-feature includes an awesome pirate-themed stunt show and an interactive pirate school.
- Carnival – over 70 rides and 40 games mean that L.A. County Fair’s carnival is bigger than some town’s amusement parks.
- Jurassic Planet – a signature of sorts, Jurassic Planet is one of the more extravagant attractions at the 2010 L.A. County Fair. You’ll explore a richly designed bio-research facility, meet some animatronic dinos, and even dig for fossils. Check schedule for events.
- Our Body: The Universe Within – for something a little more cerebral, check out this hugely popular traveling exhibit. Explore the intricate mysteries of the human body by studying actual bodies, removed of skin, and preserved via plastination. No gross anatomy textbook could ever come close.
- “End of Summer” Concerts – the 2010 L.A. County Fair concert schedule is packed: Lifehouse, Carolina Liar, Rick Springfield, Darius Rucker, Selena Gomez, Boyz II Men, En Vogue, War, Hall and Oates, Bad Company, 3OH!3. See schedule.
Of course, no fair is complete without incredible food. The 2010 L.A. County Fair is sure to bring it like it does every year ….. but unfortunately the food information isn’t available yet. I can’t eke out any tidbits from this year’s menu. What I can tell you is that in years past, they’ve had deep-fried White Castles. I mean, that says it all, right?
It’s a lot to take in, which is probably why they’re open for a whole month. Plenty of time to drop in two, three, even four times to see and do it all. The L.A. County Fair at Pomona Fairplex in Pomona, California will run daily from September 4 – October 3, 2010. At the gate, weekday admission is $12, weekend admission is $17. However, you should pre-purchase your admission online for a sweet discount. Learn all about it here.

For L.A. County Fair hotels, we really like the Radisson Suites Covina Hotel. In fact, it’s the only hotel near Pomona Fairplex that we recommend. From lobby to room, the Radisson Suites Covina is effortlessly stylish, yet low-key and comfortable. Not to mention, it’s never too hard on your budget. All the bullet-points are there: free and reliable high-speed Internet, heated swimming pool, Jacuzzi, shuttle service to the Fairplex and outstanding dining. We’ve never had anything less than a stellar experience.
Have fun at the 2010 L.A. County Fair at Pomona Fairplex!
