The Nest Haunted House in Phoenix, Arizona

If you’ll allow a sports metaphor, location is one of the intangibles of the haunted attraction industry. Whatever the mood of the haunted house, there will always be something distracting about reaching the exit and finding yourself back in a cheery, well-lit place. Just one of many reasons we don’t report on haunted houses in malls and neighborhood strip centers.

But, out in the middle of the country, where an exit sign is no sanctuary from the ghouls of the night, and only the next victim can hear you scream, that’s where your imagination can truly run wild. The Nest haunted attraction near Phoenix, Arizona would be a top-quality haunt just about anywhere, but with their 2010 relocation to Rawhide at Wildhorse Pass, off I-10 in the middle of nowhere, the eager team at The Nest is primed to have one of the best haunted houses in 2010.

We’ve mentioned Rawhide at Wildhorse Pass before. The charming western-themed town is a great place to bring the family, and it’s a great place to get a steak, too. This September and October, however, it’s also a great place to run for your life. The Nest has taken over the unsuspecting town, and there will be blood.

The Nest (at a previous location)

The Nest is a haunted complex featuring a variety of frightening attractions all stitched together by a gruesome narrative. You’ll remember from our list, “The Top 13 Haunted Houses in America,” that I love a good story, and the nasty tale behind The Nest is ready for the big screen. Tall, powerful and deeply deranged, the unfortunate Jacob Kell lived a life of abuse and torment. It was a Halloween night some 65 years ago when his drunken stepfather, on one of his usual rages, accidentally snapped the neck of Sissy, Jacob’s sister and only friend. Turns out, his sister’s neck wasn’t the only thing that snapped that night. Her death set Jacob off on a vicious killing spree that left the town painted in blood. I’ll let you read the grittier details on the website.

The Nest promises to make full use of their new location. Rawhide’s once-friendly main drag will become the “Monster Midway”, a general meeting place crawling with creepy characters and nerve-settling concessions. When you’re ready for the headline event, move along to the fright pavilion.

Boasting 10,000 square feet of blood-curdling terror, “The Nest” is a more than worthy main attraction. “The Nest” begins in the farm house, where tricks of the eye and a stifling atmosphere are quick to put you ill at ease. An unsettling stretch of pure darkness will leave you shaken for days. Next is a stroll through a cemetery that seems to stir in the night. Finally, and most importantly, you reach “The Carnage”, where Jacob Kell’s gruesome deeds are on full display.

The Nest also features a number of auxiliary attractions, stunt shows, and more tame entertainment for the kids, all of which may feature additional admission, so we judge more on the quality of the main haunt itself, which is well worth while. Especially if you see the drive out to Rawhide as an opportunity and a hassle.

Simply, it’s one of the best haunted houses in Arizona and possibly even the country. The Nest will open for the 2010 season the night of September 24 and will continue racking up victims through October 31 (open Friday-Sunday and select Thursdays). Regular admission is $25 regular, $35 VIP (skip to the front of the line, visit every attraction twice). We say avoid the lines by arriving early, not paying an extra 10 bucks. You can also get coupons on the Website.
