In 1930s Southern California, people had a lot of open country, but not a lot to do. As is the nature of man, the residents of Los Angeles set out to tame the open country as man has done for centuries: speed, machinery and reckless endangerment. In the chassis of an old Model T, or maybe a Model A, the hot rod was born.
Stripped of weight, equipped for sheer velocity, the hot rod is testament to American ingenuity in the face of true needlessness. From multi-million dollar water shows in the desert to four old white guys carved into a mountainside, hot rods speak to the soul of that great American ideal: just ’cause.
Hot rods are a part of American culture and heritage, and in Pomona, California a few miles outside Los Angeles, that hot rod feeling never left. This January, head to the Pomona Fairplex for the 62nd Annual Grand National Roadster Show.
A welcome home for roadster enthusiasts of any stripe, the Grand National Roadster Show brings out the absolute best in classic and contemporary hot rods, many of them driven in (or more likely shipped) from as far flung as Florida, the Gulf Coast, or even the Northeast. At its peak, the main show floor will display 500 immaculate roadsters: award winners, customs, rarities, even celebrity-owned rods. And if that weren’t enough, this year the cars and owners will be decked out in glorious Americana to fit 2011’s theme, “Route 66″.
Simply to see the vintages rides, sparkling with nostalgic fervor, is treat enough in itself. But, any true roadster fanatic knows the only true way to experience the Grand National Roadster Show in Pomona is to drive in. On Saturday and Sunday, organizers open the lots, and as many as eight hundred hot rods roll in to strut their hopped-up stuff.

The roads, sidewalks and alleyways will be packed with glimmering paint, big engines and the snapping cameras of an awestruck crowd. Unlike the indoor show, the Drive In is a laidback, community affair. There’s nothing to win but the adulation of your fellow classic car lovers.
There are only so many Drive In spaces available. It’s early yet, the show isn’t until January 28-30, but if you want to drive in to the Grand National Roadster Show, here’s the application.
If a roadster show interests you at all, then I imagine you hardly need anything else, but the Grand National Roadster Show does deliver a variety of fun. Head to Building 10 for live music every day, or hang out by the concert stage in the center courtyard. There’s plenty of food, of course, plus chances to meet (C-list) celebrities. If you come on Sunday, be sure to stick around for the evening Awards Ceremony, when they crown “America’s Most Beautiful Roadster”.
The 2011 Grand National Roadster Show will be held at the Pomona Fairplex in Pomona, California, January 28-30, 2011. General admission is $20. Learn more.
