Boat & Brew Adventure near Frederick, Maryland

There’s a zen-like balance to today’s feature that borders on genius. After kayaking nearly six miles of rippling Monocacy River, what else can you say but, “I need a beer.”

Surely at least someone at River & Trail Outfitters thought the same when developing their Boat & Brew Adventure. Just so happens they also managed to work in some brilliant sightseeing, a tasty meal, a historic site or two, a fascinating tour and, most importantly, a good brew. Here’s what it’s all about:

Your day begins at 10:00 a.m. at the Monocacy River Bridge, which is about 16 miles outside of downtown Frederick, Maryland. River & Trail Outfitters will provide you with all necessary equipment: canoe or kayak, paddles and river shoes. By 10:30, you’re in the water, slicing a leisurely 5.8-mile path down the scenic Monocacy River.

Stress on the leisurely. This journey has the occasional churn, but it’s not for hardcore thrill-seekers. Rather, it’s a peaceful chance to relax, maybe hear a story or two, and soak in your surroundings. The course down Monocacy River is dotted with sweeping farmlands, the occasional hamlet peaking through the trees and, in the distance, the Cactoctin Mountain Range. The roughly 3.5 hour trip includes a stop for lunch, so bring along a bag lunch in a waterproof container or purchase one in advance from R&T.

Around 2:00 p.m. you’ll depart the river, but your day isn’t even close to over. Next it’s a shuttle to Barley & Hops Brewery, a local favorite in Frederick, Maryland. Your visit includes a guided tour of the brewery, followed by a sampling of six of their delicious microbrews. And because paddling six miles is hard work, appetizers are also provided for a little post-workout nosh.

That brings you to the end of the excursion. Best part, it’s only about 4:30, and you have a whole evening still to make your own by exploring historic downtown Frederick, enjoy one of the popular local restaurants, maybe seeing a show at the Maryland Ensemble Theatre. The options are endless!

The Boat & Brew Adventure by River & Trail Outfitters is hosted on select Saturdays through the spring, summer and fall. The cost is $86 per person and includes equipment, guides, brewery tour, beer tasting, appetizers and parking. For groups of 20 or more, R&T will host the tour on non-Saturdays. Learn more.
