Just as Abraham Lincoln spoke of “A new birth of freedom” in his Gettysburg Address, Gettysburg Battlefield offers up a wide array of liberating options for touring this sacred ground. Start your visit with the full Gettysburg Experience and tickets to the Cyclorama, Film and Museum then choose from several methods for touring the 6,000 acre battlefield. Take a moment to pay homage to the fallen at Soldiers’ National Cemetery or mix and match these attractions in any way you desire to get the most out of your experience.
The Gettysburg Experience
Your Gettysburg Experience should begin with a viewing of the film A New Birth of Freedom and the famed Gettysburg Cyclorama.
Sponsored by the History Channel and narrated by the likes of Morgan Freeman, Sam Waterston and Marcia Gay Harden, A New Birth of Freedom allows us a first-hand view of the Battle of Gettysburg and how it deeply altered our nation. Enraptured viewers are reminded of not only the importance of our freedoms and democracy, but the cost.
Standing at an imposing 377 ft around and 42 ft high, the Gettysburg Cyclorama was painted over one year in the late 1880’s by French artist Paul Philippoteaux and a team of assistants. The Cyclorama is today as Philippoteaux had originally envisioned – sound and light, an overhead canopy, and three-dimensional diorama featuring stone walls, shattered trees and cannons. Delve deeply and with all your senses into that fateful moment in American history.
Battlefield Tours
Explore this 6,000 acre battlefield any number of ways; a guided bus tour, guided car tour, self-guided car tour or walking tour. Impressively, all tour guides are licensed by the National Park Service and train for years to pass extensive qualifying tests.
Guided tours include a climate controlled coach with other passengers where you’re allowed to step out and explore the area or a private tour where a personal guide drives your car along a 2 hour excursion through the battlefield. For self-guided tours, visitors can purchase a tour CD in the bookstore to play in their car, pick up a self-guided auto tour map from the Visitor’s Center or traverse the field freely on two feet.
Soldiers’ National Cemetery
In the hopes of uniting our nation after such a divisive battle, Lincoln’s famous Gettysburg Address was given at the dedication ceremony of this significant landmark. Markers are arranged in two concentric semi-circles with sections for Union soldiers, US Regulars and unknowns. Markers have since been added for the fallen from the Spanish-American War and World War I. Rising up from the center is the striking Soldiers National Monument by sculptor Randolph Rogers.
A visit to Gettysburg Battlefield has become a multi-faceted experience joining the past with the present. Allow modern conveniences to enhance your knowledge, experience and understanding of this somber, but ultimately hopeful, moment in our past.
